NEWS & NOTES
DAUGHTER EFFECT
A 2013 study by researchers at Baylor
University found fathers bond most with
daughters through sharing activities and
hobbies together. Research shows wom-
en with active fathers are more likely
to graduate from college, enter high-
er-paying jobs, manage stress better, and
go on to have more stable, long-lasting
relationships. Fathers who have daugh-
ters gain a new sense of empathy toward
women.
Psychology Today
reports, “…
among previously childless men, the
birth of a daughter causes a larger shift
toward more progressive gender ideology
than does the birth of a son.”

FAMILY READINGTIME =
ACHIEVEMENTS LATER
IN LIFE
A new H
arris Poll finds frequent family
reading time correlates with numerous
additional benefits, both in childhood
and later in life. Adults whose parents
read to them every day when they were
young are likely to report very strong
relationships with their parents, and
this bond decreases as the frequency of
childhood story times goes down: 74%
among those whose parents read to
them every day, 64% among those who
were read to at least weekly, 52% among
those read to less than once a week,
and 33% of those who don’t recall their
parents reading to them. Also, among
adults whose parents read to them every
day, 72% strongly agree that they love
to read. This is much less pronounced
among those whose parents read to them
less. Additionally, adults who were read
to daily, or at least weekly, are signifi-
cantly more likely to report six-figure
incomes than those who were read to
less than once a week or never. They
are more likely than their counterparts
to hold a college degree and are nearly
twice as likely to hold graduate degrees.

WHOVISITS
CONGREGATIONS?
At a typical U.S. worship service, 2%
of worshippers are first-time attendees.
They are remarkably similar to regular
attendees in many ways. Sixty-seven
percent of first-time visitors were partic-
ipating in another congregation before
visiting their new congregation.
