LAY HELPING
T
he Irish go to China. The Chinese go to Afghanistan. The Afghans
go to Spain. The Spanish go to Brazil. The Brazilians go to Malay-
sia. Hundreds of thousands leave their homelands to venture into
unfamiliar territory—to cross the invisible boundaries of culture
and take the love of Jesus where it has not gone before. This is a worldwide
phenomenon, increasingly typified by people from non-Western societies.
Millions who are displaced involuntarily face even greater pressures. What
makes the difference? Why do so many give up, unable to adjust to the
rigors of change? Why do some stay, but fail? Is giving up inevitable, or are
there ways to create and increase resiliency for the long haul?
